SUMMARY:Splendor in the Brass
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, March 29\, 2026\, at 2:00pm the Betty Strong Encounter Center welcomes back the Floyd Valley Brass Quintet who will present “Splendor in the Brass.” The group is excited to play here again and their show will include a variety of entertaining music. Admission is free\, but freewill donations encouraged. \nThe members of the quintet are the following:  Kevin Linder~trumpet: Kevin is an accomplished trumpet player performing and teaching students from high school through university level throughout N.W. Iowa. In addition\, Kevin is the director of the Prairie Winds Jazz Band. \nMichael Prichard~trumpet: Michael is the band director at the Le Mars Community High School and is the conductor of the Sioux City Municipal Band in the summer. He is active in many professional music organizations in Iowa. \nRichard Ziettlow~ French Horn: Richard was a student of Mr. Brice in Le Mars and was a member of the Iowa All-State Band.  He is also a Le Mars Chamber of Commerce board member and President of the Le Mars Community Daycare Center Board of Directors. Currently\, he serves as Chairman of the Historic Preservation Committee of the City of Le Mars. \nBrad Pick~ trombone: Brad is an officer at Prime Bank in Le Mars.  He was also a graduate of Le Mars high school and was selected for the Iowa All-State Band. He also serves on the Le Mars City Council. \nRolyn Beaird~ tuba: Rolyn is a highly sought-after tuba player throughout the area and travels as a representative for Popplers Music in Sioux Falls\, SD. \nThe Floyd Valley Brass quintet was formed early in 2025 under the direction of Joe Brice.  Mr. Brice was director of bands at Le Mars Community Schools high school from 1959-1974.  He then was band director at Cherry Creek School District in S.E. suburban Denver before returning to Le Mars in 2024.

SUMMARY:Heroism on the Plains: Story Songs of Courage and Determination
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, April 12\, 2026\, at 2:00pm in the Betty Strong Encounter Center auditorium\, Gary Zalud and Dan Holtz will present Heroism on the Plains: Story Songs of Courage and Determination. Admission is free\, but freewill donations encouraged. \nTheir program includes songs about fascinating stories from Nebraska and Great Plains history. Their songs include stories about homesteaders\, Native Americans\, World War II heroes\, natural wonders and more. The duo brings Nebraska and plains history alive through their acoustic-electric renditions of Holtz’s and Zalud’s story songs. \nHoltz and Zalud\, whose musical collaboration goes back to their days growing up in Ord\, NE\, now perform as “Flatwater Reunion\,” after recently re-connecting. They played together in a musical group named “Calico\,” nearly 50 years ago. \nDr. Holtz is a Peru State College Emeritus Professor of English; Dr. Zalud is Emeritus Professor of Literacy Education and was the longtime Chair of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. In the year 2000\, Holtz was the recipient of the Nebraska State College System Teaching Excellence Award and has given more than 500 musical\, historical-storytelling programs statewide and beyond through the sponsorship of Humanities Nebraska. Zalud received the USD School of Education 2015-16 Excellence in Service award for impactful work with school districts in North and South Dakota\, Nebraska\, Minnesota\, Wyoming and Iowa.

Prior to teaching to Lincoln\, she spent ten years teaching music for the Sioux City Community School District. While in Iowa\, she was in shows at the Sioux City Community Theatre\, LAMB\, Morningside University\, and with Rockestra. Last year she was in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever the Musical and Cinderella at the Lincoln Community Playhouse. \nSarah loves to sing folk music and play guitar. She holds a degree in music from Eastern Illinois University and a master degree in education from Morningside. She hopes the songs today make you tap your toes and put a smile on your face!

He tells us about his life and how he changed the art world forever with his work. It is the man behind American Gothic that we hear and see\, and the story of how he took the moments\, the memories and the people of our state to show the whole world the specialness of this Iowa. After the presentation\, the audience is encouraged to ask questions about Grant Wood and his life. \nTom Milligan has been a working theatrical professional for the past 45 years\, working as an actor\, director\, scene designer\, producer\, and writer. Originally from Des Moines\, companies credited to his resume include Charlie’s Showplace Dinner Theatre\, The Drake Opera\, The Drama Workshop\, and The Old Creamery Theatre.

It is celebrated on different days in many parts of the world and most commonly in the months of March or May. \nMike Langley is a singer-songwriter and 2012 Iowa Rock ’n’ Roll Music Association (IRRMA) Hall of Fame inductee. He has been known to teach basic guitar through Western Iowa Tech’s Lifelong Learning program. The free outdoor education weekend is held in the Loess Hills northeast of Onawa\, Iowa. The weekend has seasoned conservationists leading nature hikes\, wildflower walks\, ecology programs\, wildlife discussions and outdoor skills demonstrations along with campfire cooking\, outdoor education\, geology / history lessons\, and kids experiences. \nTyler Ruge\, event coordinator  Monona County conservation.   naturalist and park ranger and Dianne Blankenship\, former event coordinator and seminar board member\, and a member of the seminar planning committee will cover the story of how the seminar got started\, how it evolved over the decades\, and where the seminar is at now and how things have changed. Porch Swing also features original songs and non-traditional songs played in the Hot Swing style. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, May 24\, 2026\, at 2:00pm in the Betty Strong Encounter Center auditorium\, John Liepa Iowa’s Ethnic Heritage\, or “Who Do You Think We Are?” Admission is free\, but freewill donations encouraged. \nEnjoy the unfolding and changing adventure of Iowa’s immigration history. Beginning with the Ioway\, one of 17 distinctive indigenous tribal groups\, he will trace chronologically who we are as Iowans. \nFrom Spanish explorers and French trappers\, traders and priests; to the dominant English\, Germans and Irish; to Scandinavians\, Dutch and Czechs\, we will explore why these groups chose to leave their homelands and how they eventually ended up in Iowa. African Americans\, Eastern Europeans and Hispanics have different stories to share along with other “newer” Iowans. This interactive talk will let us work together to discover who we are\, and who we are becoming as Iowans. \nLiepa is Professor Emeritus of History and Political Science at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC.) He taught courses in Political Science\, U.S.\, and Iowa History from 1972-2010. He has a B.S in History and an M.A. in Political Science from Iowa State University. He received an “Excellence in Education” award in 2001 and was honored as DMACC’s “Educator of the Year” in 2004. He served five terms on the State Historical Society of Iowa’s Board of Trustees from 1998 – 2113\, having served both as Chair and Vice-Chair; and\, on the Iowa Historical Foundation\, the fundraising arm of the State Historical Society of Iowa. Since retiring\, he has taught courses for the Senior College of Greater Des Moines\, OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) at Drake University and as an independent presenter on “Iowa’s Role in the Civil War\,” Iowa’s Ethnic Heritage\, or “Who Do You Think You Are?\,” and the “Early History of Baseball in Iowa.” John has been a 24-year member and Program Chair of the Des Moines Civil War Roundtable. \nThe Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center has received a grant award from Humanities Iowa\, a state-based affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities\, in support of the Humanities Series programs. \nThe Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center/Betty Strong Encounter Center was built and is sustained by the Missouri River Historic Development Organization as a gift of history to the community. He recently retired as a financial advisor and has been singing at weddings and funerals for over 40 years. He has also been honored to sing the National Anthem for many years as Sioux City has hosted the NAIA Women’s National Championships. \nJoanne was born in Saigon\, Vietnam\, and her family moved to Sioux City in 1990. Joanne has been singing and playing guitar since age 14. Joanne teaches yoga\, and Kevin and Joanne both sing in the Holy Cross church choir at Blessed Sacrament as well as their smaller ensemble group at St. Michael’s Church. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, June 7\, 2026\, at 2:00pm in the Betty Strong Auditorium\, Helen Lewis will share a fascinating exploration into “At Heart…A Westerner: Theodore Roosevelt’s Formation in the West.” Admission is free\, but freewill donations encouraged. \nHighly celebrated as leader of the Rough Riders and as twenty-sixth President of the United States\, Theodore Roosevelt attributed his physical stamina and strength of character\, in large part\, to his experiences in the Dakotas as ranch owner and hunter.  However\, the young Theodore Roosevelt fulfilled many other roles in the West\, which not only prepared him for his later rigorous public service\, but which also influenced his own ideals of manhood. With courage and persistence\, “Four Eyes” Roosevelt\, the Dude from the East\, transformed himself into a cowboy respected in the West. Lewis uses photos and stories\, many by Roosevelt himself\, to explore the conversion of New York urbanite Theodore Roosevelt into a Dakota ranchman. \nHelen Lewis\, retired instructor at Western Iowa Tech Community College\, taught courses in English and Humanities. Her special interests include westerns\, women artists\, medieval mysteries\, and square dancing. Originally with the Great Plains Chautauqua Society\, Lewis continues to offer many programs for Humanities Iowa and Nebraska Humanities. \nThe Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center received a grant award from Humanities Iowa\, a state-based affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities\, in support of the Humanities Series programs.

SUMMARY:Working with the Enemy:  German\, Italian and Japanese Prisoners of War  in Iowa during the Second World War
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, June 28\, 2026\, at 2:00pm\, in the Betty Strong Auditorium\, historian/educator/lecturer Chad Timm will share the captivating history of “Working with the Enemy: German\, Italian and Japanese Prisoners of War in Iowa during the Second World War.”  Admission is free\, but free will donations are encouraged. \nAs part of a relatively quiet and under-publicized government program\, thousands of enemy soldiers invaded Iowa in 1943. With the hugely successful 1942 Allied campaign against Adolf Hitler’s Afrika Corps in North Africa\, the number of enemy prisoners of war (POW) needing interment grew dramatically. Great Britain\, no longer able to accommodate the increasing number of POWs\, looked to the United States for help. Helping with the detainment of enemy POWs made sense\, as American cargo vessels were returning home with empty hulls after delivering war materials. \nWhat began as an experiment in isolated locations in the south and southwest eventually led to more than 500 camps and 400\,000 enemy soldiers interned in the United States\, including two camps in the state of Iowa. Due to a severe shortage of agricultural laborers coupled with increased War Food Administration quotas for farm goods\, Iowa’s farmers needed help doing their part to assist the United States in winning the war. \nThis talk will focus on the creation of two POW camps in Iowa during the Second World War: one in the Northern Iowa town of Algona and one in the Southwestern Iowa town of Clarinda. Some of the topics discussed will be life in a prisoner of war camp\, community relations\, the POW labor program\, branch camps in more than 30 Iowa communities and the arrival of Japanese prisoners at Camp Clarinda in early 1945. Camp Clarinda was one of only two camps in the country to house Japanese soldiers. The story of POW interment in Iowa is a fascinating story of Iowans being confronted by the enemy: an enemy they not only needed to help them meet their wartime goals but also challenged them to find their humanity. \nChad has a BA in History from Simpson College\, a master’s degree in history and a PhD in Education from Iowa State University. He taught middle and high school social studies in Central Iowa from 1995-2010 before moving to higher education where he is a social studies expert and teaches future social studies teachers at Simpson College. He recently published a book titled “Teaching History with Popular Media: Strategies for Inquiry Based Learning” with McFarland Press. \nThe Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center received a grant award from Humanities Iowa\, a state-based affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities\, in support of the Humanities Series programs.

DESCRIPTION:On July 5\, 2026\, in the Betty Strong Encounter Center auditorium\, retired history professor and award winning author Don Hickey will deliver an illustrated lecture on Buffalo Bill and His Wild West Show.  Admission is free\, but freewill donations are encouraged. \nBuffalo Bill Cody had already become a national hero as a soldier\, scout\, and Indian fighter when he developed his Wild West Show to illustrate the vanishing character of the West that he had helped tame.  Seen by 50 million people on both sides of the Atlantic\, the show turned its founder and star into the most famous man in the world. \nHickey holds a PhD from the University of Illinois and is a specialist in early American history and American military history. He is best known for his books\, The War of 1812: A Forgotten Conflict (University of Illinois Press) and Nebraska Moments: Glimpses of Nebraska’s Past (University of Nebraska Press). DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, July 12\, 2026\, at 2:00pm in the Betty Strong Encounter Center\, the “Then & Now” duo comprised of singer-guitarist Barbara Sabella and fiddler-violinist Beth Preheim will bring new life to oldies. Admission is free\, but freewill donations are encouraged. \nThey will play many songs by the Gershwins\, Rodgers & Hart\, Hoagy Carmichael\, and more. Many of those tunes were popularized by singers like Etta James\, Frank Sinatra\, Johnny Mathis\, Louis Armstrong\, and Carly Simon. \nBarbara likes to sing pop\, country\, old time folk\, blues\, gospel\, and jazz. The words matter\, and she smooths out the music to honor the stories that the songs tell. She regularly plays with a string band in Canton\, SD\, a hub of the South Dakota Friends of Traditional Music crowd. She and cohorts frequently “practice in public” to bring music to folks who might not get out that much. \nBeth picked up her first violin in 1972 in the Congo. She plays fiddle in various bands across all genres: Celtic\, Americana\, cow punk\, rock\, blues\, jazz\, and old-time and Scandinavian fiddle. She has taught both classical violin and various fiddle styles to more than 100 students. Beth also founded a ukulele club and adds vocals\, ukulele and other folk instruments in a performing ukulele group called the Prairie Waves. \n The Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center/Betty Strong Encounter Center was built and is sustained by the Missouri River Historic Development Organization as a gift of history to the community. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, August 15\, 2026\, at 7:00pm don’t miss our last outdoor show of the 2026 season. This evening presents the amazing talents of the Vocalitas trio. Admission is free\, but freewill donations are encouraged. \nThe Vocalitas are a bilingual Florida based female vocal trio who will dazzle you with the sounds of the swing era and mid-century merriment fused with the popular hits of today. \nThe audience will be positioned in a grassy area of Center’s campus\, so they are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets\, as well as refreshments. SUMMARY:The Musical Talents of the Radio Rangers
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, August 16\, 2026\, at 2:00pm Radio Rangers a two-piece band playing live music that includes Americana original songs\, and classic covers. band will entertain. Admission is free\, but freewill donations are encouraged \nRadio Rangers members are Randy Washburn who sings\, plays drums and keyboard lead and Donna Washburn who sings and plays guitar and bass. They have released three albums of original songs and have recently completed “The Plow in the Oak” Song Cycle. \nRandy and Donna have been playing together in bands since 1979. They were the founding members of the country/pop band “Prairie Fire” that played parties and nightclubs in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Missouri\, and Minnesota.  They did a Midwest tour in 1988 with a group called “Radio Flyers” and later became members of the party band “Time Bandits.” As their children became teenagers\, they worked with them in a horn band called “Nightwatch” playing town celebrations\, county fairs and private parties. \nRandy and Donna are retired music teachers who formed the current duo after retirement.  Radio Rangers has played wineries\, clubs\, parties and celebrations in Iowa\, Nebraska\, South Dakota\, Minnesota\, Arizona and Florida. \nThe Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center/Betty Strong Encounter Center was built and is sustained by the Missouri River Historic Development Organization as a gift of history to the community. SUMMARY:The Music of Crabgrass
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, August 23\, 2026\, at 2:00 pm\, at the Betty Strong Encounter Center\, get ready for some foot stompin’\, handclapin’ music as Crabgrass performs Traditional\, Bluegrass\, and Country Music.  Admission is free\, but freewill donations are encouraged. \nCrabgrass takes you back in time to the songs of the Grand Old Opry as Joan and Kris perform songs of the Carter family\, Bill Monroe\, Ralph Stanley\, Flatt & Scruggs\, Johnny Cash\, Loretta Lynn\, Patsy Cline\, and various other artists. Each tune is rich in arrangement\, and these musicians have years of performing experience. \nThe originator of Crabgrass\, Joan Wells\, a native of Seward NE from a musical\, artistic family\, sings and plays rhythm and lead guitar.  A Carroll IA native\, Kris Simon sings harmony\, plays bass\, and provides some comedy for the performance. Kris also performs “Cattle Trails and Songs of the West” through Humanities Nebraska Speakers Bureau. Joining them at this performance is Steve Hanson\, a Lincoln musician who was influenced by his musician parents. He began playing at age 13. He spent his career Steve teaches guitar\, mandolin\, and banjo \nAltogether they are known as “Crabgrass\,” a unique sound inspired by their lover for real traditional music. Crabgrass is a Lincoln\, NE-based group who has performed for over ten years in the Lincoln and Omaha area. They have appeared for Echoes of the Trail\, Nebraska Bluegrass Festival\, Barn Fest\, Great Platte River Road Archway Monument\, Southeast Community College\, Hay Market Haydays\, Bellevue Berry Farm\, Riverside Fest\, Ribfest\, and various stage shows\, festivals\, picnics\, and celebrations. \nThe Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center/Betty Strong Encounter Center was built and is sustained by the Missouri River Historic Development Organization as a gift of history to the community.
