He was the last Founding Father to serve as president as well as the last president of the Virginia dynasty. He is primarily known for the Monroe Doctrine\, a foreign policy statement that warned European powers not to interfere in the affairs of the Western Hemisphere. \nHickey holds a PhD from the University of Illinois and is a specialist in early American history and American military history. He is best known for his books\, The War of 1812: A Forgotten Conflict (University of Illinois Press) and Nebraska Moments: Glimpses of Nebraska’s Past (University of Nebraska Press). His latest book\, Tecumseh’s War: The Epic Conflict for the Heart of America\, (Westholme Publishing) was published in 2023.

Crabgrass takes you back in time to the songs of the Grand Old Opry as Joan and Kris perform songs of the Carter family\, Bill Monroe\, Ralph Stanley\, Flatt & Scruggs\, Johnny Cash\, Loretta Lynn\, Patsy Cline\, and various other artists. Each tune is rich in arrangement. Get ready for some fun and to hear your country and bluegrass favorites. \nCrabgrass has been performing for a number of years. This Nebraska-based group has appeared for Echoes of the Trail\, Nebraska Bluegrass Festival\, Great Platte River Road Archway Monument\, Southeast Community College\, Bellevue Berry Farm\, Riverside Fest\, Foundation Garden Concert Series\, and various stage shows\, festivals\, and celebrations.

Admission is free but freewill donation encouraged. The audience will be positioned in a grassy area of Center’s campus\, so they are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets\, as well as refreshments. In case of rain\, the show will be moved inside to the auditorium. \nPerforming since 1980\, Bill is a full-time Classic Rock/Oldies/Folk Rock Musician who tours nationally. He has served as an emcee for various events.  He performs with Gibson\, Epiphone\, and Martin Acoustic Guitars. He performs with a state-the-art Carvin sound system through the new\, stunning Fishman/Aura technology.

SUMMARY:Film Premiere of Big Medicine: York Outdoors
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, July 13\, 2025\, at 2:00pm join us for a premiere showing of Big Medicine: York Outdoors. This 30-45 minute film is one component of the broader Big Medicine: The York Project\, a collaborative initiative to bring York’s story to the foreground.  The film was produced by Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail in partnership with NEW Multimedia. No admission charge\, but freewill donations encouraged. \n Big Medicine: York Outdoors explores the untold story of York\, the only African American member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Enslaved by Captain William Clark\, York did not choose to be part of this journey\, yet his significant contributions as a hunter\, guide\, caretaker\, and intermediary in interactions with Tribal Nations are chronicled in the journals of Expedition members as well as in accounts from the tribes they met along the way. The Arikara tribe referred to him as Big Medicine for his strength and the color of his skin. \nThis film follows eight educators and environmental stewards as they retrace York’s steps on a four-day river trip along the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. On their journey to revive York’s story\, they explore themes of recreation access for people of color\, and the joy and healing that the outdoors can provide. \nBig Medicine: York Outdoors is an opportunity to reflect on history\, honor York’s legacy\, and recognize the connections between community\, nature\, and personal growth.

DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, July 6\, 2025\, at 2:00pm\, the Betty Strong Encounter Center welcomes Nancy Lael Braun who will share “Heading Out: A Walk in Poetry.”  No admission charge\, but freewill donations encouraged. \nBraun says that the idea of heading out can apply to a walk in the physical world or a journey of spiritual introspection and discovery or an act of uprooting one’s life to pursue a new direction. \nShe will be reading poetry from three collections: The poems of Heading Out spring from the simple activity of walking\, which the poet says\, “has saved her and formed her and given her gifts beyond measure.” The unsentimental poetry in her second collection A Puddle as Big as the Yard was inspired by watching a child grow and the experience of being a grandparent. The third poems in Fasting Slowly reflect a self-examination sparked by the spiritual practice of fasting with honesty\, questioning\, and humor. \nBraun is a life-long Midwesterner\, currently splitting her time between Lone Tree\, Iowa\, and Sioux City\, Iowa. Her poems have appeared in Aquifer: Florida Review Online\, Barbaric Yawp\, Big Muddy\, Briar Cliff Review\, Iowa City: Poetry in Public\, Passager\, Pasque Petals\, Persimmon Tree\, and TSR: The Southampton Review.

DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, June 29\, 2025\, Michael Wanbdi Gdeska O’Connor (Spotted Eagle) will present “Relation with Creation\,” a way of looking at everything as a relation and creating a way of life. Admission is free with a reception to follow. \nLakota/Dakota/Nakota people have a way of life that connects closely with all of creation\, all of Mother Nature\, and all beings that exist on Grandmother Earth and in the sky world.  They refer to all of these members of creation as relatives.  As they are seen as relatives\, they are treated as such. O’Connor will also share about the sacred way of what is commonly referred to as smudging\, about the importance of eagle feathers\, and of prayer and the use of the drum and prayer song. \nO’Connor is an enrolled member of the Ihanktonwan Oyate (Yankton Sioux Tribe). He is a graduate of Sinte Gleska University. He grew up in both South Dakota and Sioux City and has a very personal and spiritual connection to the Sioux City community and its area lands and rivers. \nFor 10 years O’Connor has led a local volunteer group through the Sioux City Adopt a Park program dedicated to keeping Sioux City`s War Eagle Park garbage and litter free. He has specialized for many years working with tribal people in various capacities\, most recently as Program Director for Cultural Mentoring at the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls. He has also devoted many years working as a volunteer mentor for those with addictions problems and currently volunteers with a national Native American/Indigenous organization facilitating online Talking Circles. \nHe is an artist and currently working on a book. He has been a featured speaker and presenter on the national and local level in both in person and online events as well as many guest appearances on podcasts\, and guest correspondent on national media news coverage related to Indigenous people’s activism and advocacy. He is currently working to provide culturally related lyrics for a Native American/Indigenous female musician and currently serve as a Cultural Coordinator for a non-profit where he leads Talking Circles and teaches cultural relevant classes.

DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, June 22\, 2025\, at 2:00pm\, please help us welcome to the Betty Strong Encounter Center stage Bill Peterson with special guests Ruthie Dornfeld and Kristian Bugge. Admission is free with a reception to follow. \nTheir repertoire spans from Danish traditional fiddle tunes and music from the other Nordic countries to old-time American and self-composed original tunes\, possibly spiced up with a few Venezuelan waltzes. Much of the music was learned directly from folk music legends like Danish American Dwight Lamb (1934-2024)\, Danish accordion player Karl Skaarup (1924-2013)\, fiddler Peter Uhrbrand from the Danish island of Fanø\, and many more. \nKristian and Ruthie first met each other in the Danish folk music circles in the mid-1990’s\, where Ruthie had been touring regularly and grown a reputation as a well-renowned artist and fiddler since the early 1980’s. Later when Kristian was a music student\, Ruthie was guest-teaching at the Carl Nielsen Academy of Music in Odense\, Denmark and Kristian made sure to take the opportunity to study with her while she was there. About ten years later\, they met again in and around Seattle when Kristian had started touring and performing in the USA. They formed the trio “3 Fiddlers 3 Traditions” with Métis fiddler Jamie Fox and have continued to meet and play together ever since. This summer marks a new chapter in their collaboration and friendship as they will be touring and recording as a duo the first time; excitement is running high!

DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, June 18\, 2025\, at 10:00 am\, the Many Moccasins Dance Troupe will bring their Traditional Native American style of dance to the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center’s outdoor Spirit of Discovery Stage as part of our Summer Series of programs. Admission is free. The audience will be positioned in a grassy area of Center’s campus\, so they are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets\, as well as refreshments. In case of rain\, the show will be moved inside to the auditorium. \nA program suitable for all family members\, this Native American dance ensemble performs traditional style of dance and incorporates their own unique theatrical twist. The result is a spectacular display of true Native American Culture. Since its inception in 2001\, this group has been performing for large audiences. \nThis Winnebago Nebraska dance group was originally founded by Lewis St. Cyr and his mother Therese St. Cyr. “The dance troupe was founded to provide an opportunity for all people to view a range of Native American dance styles\,” says St. Cyr. Dances performed may include men’s feathery dance\, women’s fancy shawl dance\, and the popular hoop dance. The dance troupe also showcases specialty dances particular to certain tribes\, such as the “Fish Dance” or the Applique Dance.”

In case of rain\, the show will be moved inside to the auditorium. \nThe New Horizon’s Band of Sioux City began more than 10 years ago with six members. The New Horizon’s Band currently consists of about 28 members from the Siouxland area. It is one of more than 200 U.S. programs in the New Horizon’s International Music Association\, which originated in 1991 at the Eastman School of Music\, Rochester\, NY. The Association’s sole purpose is to provide musical opportunities for adults. New Horizon’s Band of Sioux City includes musicians with limited experience as well as those who participated in high school or college bands.

DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, May 25\, 2025\, at 2:00pm in the Betty Strong Encounter Center\, Dan Holtz and Gary Zalud will present “Heroism on the Plains: Story Songs of Courage and Determination.” The songs are about fascinating stories of homesteaders\, Native Americans\, World War II heroes\, natural wonders and more from Nebraska and Great Plains history. Admission is free with a reception to follow. \nHoltz and Zalud\, whose musical collaboration began during their days growing up in Ord\, NE\, now perform as “Flatwater Reunion\,” after recently re-connecting. Playing an assortment of acoustic instruments\, the duo brings Nebraska and Great Plains history alive through their acoustic-electric renditions of Holtz’s and Zalud’s story songs. \nDr. Holtz is an Emeritus Professor of English from Peru State College in southeast Nebraska; Dr. Zalud is Emeritus Professor of Literacy Education and was the longtime Chair of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. In the year 2000\, Holtz was the recipient of the Nebraska State College System Teaching Excellence Award and has given more than 500 musical\, historical-storytelling programs through the sponsorship of Humanities Nebraska. \nZalud received the USD School of Education 2015-16 Excellence in Service award for impactful work with school districts in North and South Dakota\, Nebraska\, Minnesota\, Wyoming\, and Iowa.

DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, May 18\, 2025\, at 2:00 pm\, the Betty Strong Encounter Center is thrilled to welcome Joan Wells and Kris Simon as they travel and sing “Up the Nebraska Cattle Trail and Songs of the West.” Admission is free with a reception to follow. \nIn 1867\, and with a surplus of cattle in Texas\, cattle drives brought hundreds of thousands of cattle to Nebraska. Herds were gathered near San Antonio\, Texas and driven up the Western Trail to Ogallala\, Nebraska. During these four-month long drives cowboys would pass the time singing about life on the trail and to calm the cattle the night. \nJoan Wells and Kris Simon share about the cattle drives and the origin of western music while singing the songs of the early day cowboys.

SUMMARY:A Celebration of Mother’s Day with the Langleys
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, May 11 at 2:00 PM at the Betty Strong Encounter Center\, Jack and Mike Langley will brighten our day with a “Celebration of Mother’s Day.” Admission is free; reception follows. \nMother’s Day always evokes a heart-warming presentation from this father and son duo. Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family or individual\, as well as motherhood\, maternal bonds\, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on different days in many parts of the world and most commonly in the months of March or May. \nThe Langleys will share their vast musical talents with a mix of original and old favorite tunes. They have performed together onstage for more than 40 years\, from Sioux City to Nashville\, Tennessee\, to Vienna\, Austria and back. They are always a crowd favorite at the Center.

SUMMARY:Church History in One Easy Lesson by Dr. Bruce Forbes
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, May 4\, 2025\, at 2:00 pm\, the Betty Strong Encounter Center welcomes Dr. Bruce Forbes\, Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies\, Morningside University. Admission is free with a reception to follow. \nHe will offer a presentation lightheartedly titled “Church History in One Easy Lesson\,” from Christian beginnings to today\, with visual illustrations. His talk will attempt to explain the oft asked question of why there are so many different Christian groups. \nForbes formal academic training is in the history of Christianity\, but he has also developed a special interest in the analysis of popular culture. Forbes is a former department chair and professor of religious studies at Morningside College in Sioux City\, Iowa. He is the co-editor of two books: Religion and Popular Culture in America\, co-edited with Jeffrey H. Mahan\, and Rapture\, Revelation and the End Times: An Exploration of the Left Behind Series (2004)\, co-edited with Djeanne Halgren Kilde. He is also the author of two non-fiction books: Christmas: A Candid History (2007) and America’s Favorite Holidays: Candid Histories (2015). \n
