Admission is free\, but freewill donations are encouraged. \nThe Loess Hills Audubon Society will also have a member and friends’ Loess Hills Nature Photography Slideshow running in the atrium and during a reception following the program. The slide show is in conjunction with their photo exhibit\, A River Runs Through It\, on display in the gallery of the Betty Strong Encounter Center from Tuesday\, January 13\, 2026\, through February 22\, 2026. Copies of their programs\, field trips\, bird counts\, banquet programs and other activities as well as copies of the SCBC quarterly publication The Dickcissel\, have been archived at the Sioux City Public Museum.  This material was donated to the museum by Bob and Phyllis Nickolson. \nThe SCBC ceased operating as a birding organization.  However\, a group of people remained interested in birding\, which led to the organization of the Sioux City Chapter of the National Audubon Society.  This group obtained a Provisional Charter from the National Audubon Society. The Sioux City Chapter of the Audubon Society became the Loess Hills Audubon Society (LHAS) when the chapter was officially incorporated by the Secretary of State of Iowa on June 1\, 1984. \nThe Loess Hills Audubon Society generally meets on the first Thursday of the month\, from September through May\, with chapter outings to the best birding locations within Siouxland taking place every month. SUMMARY:Merry TUBACHRISTMAS Concert
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, December 6\, the Betty Strong Encounter Center will host “Merry TUBACHRISTMAS\,” a concert featuring Siouxland area tuba and euphonium players\, at Noon (12:00 pm). Admission is free\, but freewill donations are encouraged. \nThe audience will hear traditional Christmas carols arranged by composer Alec Wilder who died on Christmas Eve 1980. In addition to composing music for the tuba and euphonium\, Wilder was a loyal supporter of the efforts to improve the literature and public image of these instruments. \nAt the first TubaChristmas in 1973\, around 300 musicians showed up at the ice-skating rink at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City\, bearing their giant brass instruments. A massive\, all-tuba holiday concert was the brainchild of Harvey Phillips\, a tuba player and enthusiast who would go on to teach in the music school at Indiana University and start similar tuba-centric traditions such as “Octubafest.” \nTubaChristmas concerts have since popped up in practically every state. You can now enjoy the holiday stylings of amateur tuba ensembles in 296 U.S. communities\, from Anchorage\, Alaska to Hilo\, Hawaii. In 2018\, overachievers in Kansas City set a Guinness World Record. \nFor those interested in performing visit https://sites.google.com/view/sctubachristmas for updated performances and information.
