SUMMARY:Kids What’s on Wednesday: Native Games
DESCRIPTION:At the Betty Strong Encounter Center on May 21\, 2025\, the kids WOW event will be a fabulous hands-on session where kids can learn about and play Native games. The event is free to all. \nTraditional Native games had many purposes: bringing people together\, stimulating social interaction\, teaching skills\, patience\, and endurance\, qualities important to being a good person. \nFew of the games were meant to be played alone. Capturing the spectacle and the excitement\, along with the humorous things that happen in the course of a game was more important than focusing on the rules.

SUMMARY:Percy’s Pals: Zoomobile
DESCRIPTION:Zoo critters are coming to the Sioux City Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center! On May 3\, 2025\, the Sioux Falls Zoomobile will lead a 45-minute sit-down program featuring live animals. This program will begin at 11:00am in the Betty Strong Encounter Center auditorium. Admission is free and the event is appropriate for all ages. \nAudience members will have the chance to meet a few charismatic animals under the supervision of Sioux Falls zookeepers. The program will focus on reptiles and invertebrates\, their characteristics and special creature features. They will discuss what their habitat is like and what it looks like to take care of each beautiful\, unique animal. \nDuring the Lewis and Clark Expedition\, the explorers were mesmerized by the diverse and colorful wildlife in the Louisiana Territory. The expedition had many exciting and sometimes precarious encounters with animals like grizzly bears. The explorers’ journals are among the earliest natural history books about animals west of the Mississippi River. \nFor any questions or concerns\, please email Elizabeth Albright (ealbright@siouxcitylcic.com) or Kristine Bornholtz (kbornholtz@siouxcitylcic.com) or call 712-224-5242.

SUMMARY:What’s on Wednesday: Feeding the Birds
DESCRIPTION:Have you noticed all the birds now that spring has arrived? Have you thought about what they eat and how to feed them? If you are interested in creating bird feeders for the local birds of Siouxland\, then join us on Wednesday\, April 23\, 2025\, from 5:30pm-6:30pm. Our Education Coordinator\, Ms. Elizabeth\, will guide participants in exploring the different native birds of Siouxland\, their characteristics\, and how the Siouxland community can help take care of them. The class is free; all ages are welcome. \nParticipants will use craft supplies to assemble a unique and beneficial bird feeder. This activity will involve peanut butter\, but we will also have Sun Nut Butter available to those with allergy restrictions. Participants will access their creativity in the design of the birdfeeder. Once they take it home\, they can experience the joy of observing and feeding our Siouxland avian friends. No matter their age\, anyone can do something that benefits wildlife. The sense of pride and stewardship to the community is also a great chance for participants to connect positively as participants while also contributing to a positive Siouxland atmosphere. \nFor any questions or concerns\, please email Elizabeth Albright (ealbright@siouxcitylcic.com) or Kristine Bornholtz (kbornholtz@siouxcitylcic.com). You can also reach them by phone at 712-224-5242.

SUMMARY:Percy's Pals: Native American Nations
DESCRIPTION:You probably already know that Lewis and Clark encountered Native Americans on their journey. But did you know that Lewis\, Clark\, and the Corps of Discovery came into direct contact with around 50 Native American Nations? It is important for us to know that Native Americans played a very important role by helping the Corps of Discovery survive the expedition. During this class we will learn about some of the different nations who were living west of the Mississippi River\, which nations were helpful\, and just how important their help was. \nREGISTER HERE!\n[ninja_form id=’39’]

SUMMARY:Percy's Pals: Tools & Techniques
DESCRIPTION:The Lewis and Clark Expedition was a really big adventure! But did you ever wonder what kinds of tools the Corps of Discovery would have had with them? Did you ever wonder how they built forts\, made burned-out canoes\, and even mended or made their own clothing? We will discover a lot of different tasks the Corps of Discovery had to do every day\, and we will discuss the tools and techniques they used to accomplish it all. Students will even make and take home a Lewis and Clark tool of their own! \nOur 45-minute sessions typically include a storybook and/or short video\, digitally interactive lessons\, and a hands-on craft or activity. By catering to multiple learning styles during each session\, students are more likely to store what they learn in their long-term memory\, and also have a LOT of fun! \nREGISTER HERE!\n[ninja_form id=’39’]

SUMMARY:Percy's Pals: Jefferson's Codes & Gadgets / Treasure Hunt
DESCRIPTION:We all know that Thomas Jefferson was one of the framers of the United States government. Some of us know that he was responsible for sending Lewis and Clark across the North American continent. But you may be surprised to learn just how scientific President Jefferson was – he was constantly making gadgets and conducting experiments. We will learn about President Jefferson’s secret codes and a device he made to crack his codes\, which he called a “cipher.” Students will then go on a treasure hunt to earn a special prize by solving various clues using the information they’ve learned during the Percy’s Pals spring/summer series! \n[ninja_form id=’39’] \nStudents in Percy’s Pals will be divided into two groups\, based on school grade. Kindergarten through Second Grade will meet at 1:00 p.m.\, and Third through Fifth Grades will meet at 2:00 p.m. Each section of students will meet for one hour\, once a month to engage in a series of scientific adventures inspired by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Programs will include topics such as Jefferson’s gadgets\, mapmaking\, geology\, plant and animal classification\, and medicine and first aid.

SUMMARY:Preventing Food Deserts
DESCRIPTION:What is a food desert? The term “desert” can be misleading because most of us imagine a wasteland\, where not much can grow. But a food desert is very different. According to the Oxford English Dictionary\, a food desert is an urban area in which it is difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food. Millions of Americans live in a food desert\, where there is plenty of food in their neighborhood\, but none of it healthy. Together we will learn how we can change our own communities from food deserts into a food oasis. \nThe Growers’ Academy is a sixteen-week course which includes classes on topics such as soil preparation\, nutrition\, and community responsibility.
