DESCRIPTION:We all know that Thomas Jefferson was one of the framers of the United States government. Some of us know that he was responsible for sending Lewis and Clark across the North American continent. But you may be surprised to learn just how scientific President Jefferson was – he was constantly making gadgets and conducting experiments. We will learn about President Jefferson’s secret codes and a device he made to crack his codes\, which he called a “cipher.” Students will then go on a treasure hunt to earn a special prize by solving various clues using the information they’ve learned during the Percy’s Pals spring/summer series! \n[ninja_form id=’39’] \nStudents in Percy’s Pals will be divided into two groups\, based on school grade. DESCRIPTION:What is a food desert? The term “desert” can be misleading because most of us imagine a wasteland\, where not much can grow. But a food desert is very different. According to the Oxford English Dictionary\, a food desert is an urban area in which it is difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food. Millions of Americans live in a food desert\, where there is plenty of food in their neighborhood\, but none of it healthy. Together we will learn how we can change our own communities from food deserts into a food oasis. \nThe Growers’ Academy is a sixteen-week course which includes classes on topics such as soil preparation\, nutrition\, and community responsibility. SUMMARY:Lewis and Clark Kids' Club: Prehistoric Indian Village
DESCRIPTION:The Lewis and Clark Kids’ Club will take a trip to the Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village and Corn Palace in Mitchell\, South Dakota\, on Saturday\, July 20\, 2024. The Prehistoric Village is not only a museum and cultural site\, but also an active archeological dig! Students will receive a guided tour to learn more about prehistoric Native American cultures and will be able to observe the archeological site where scientists and historians are actively uncovering more evidence of early North American societies. We will also make a stop at the Mitchell Corn Palace\, which is the world’s last remaining corn palace (Sioux City was the originator of the corn palace concept and was world-renowned for them!). Transportation and admission are provided but students are asked to bring their own picnic lunch. \n8:00 a.m. Board tour bus at LCIC | 10:30 a.m. Corn Palace Tour | 11:30 a.m. Picnic Lunch | 12:30 p.m. Prehistoric Indian Village Tour | 2:30 p.m. Board tour bus | 5:00 p.m. Return to LCIC \n[ninja_form id=’38’] \nThe Lewis and Clark Kids’ Club is a new program for students in 6th\, 7th\, or 8th grade. Parents of students participating will be expected to sign all necessary waivers and permission forms for each of the field trips. In case of rain\, the show will be moved inside to the auditorium. \nOn Wednesday\, July 17\, at 10:00am\, bring the kids to a wonderful new show written specially for this summer series and produced by LAMB Arts Regional Theatre: “Uh-Oh! Little Red Riding Hood and the Three Little Pigs.” The show has six actors and seven characters: The Three Little Pigs\, Little Red Riding Hood\, Grandmother\, and the Hunter/Wolf. Tracy Bennett\, Executive Director of Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center\, states\, “We are thrilled to work with and promote local entities such as LAMB.” \nLAMB Regional Arts Theatre has a rich history of producing theatre in Sioux City. The creative force behind LAMB is Executive Director and Director of Education\, Diana Wooley and Russ Wooley\, Artistic/Managing Director. LAMB is committed to arts education and involvement with the Siouxland community. The LAMB school provides a wide range of classes for various age groups. DESCRIPTION:At some point in our lives we all need a First Aid kit handy. Lewis and Clark were no different. Although they were limited by the knowledge of the time in which they lived\, Lewis and Clark performed almost daily First Aid and needed to have as much medical knowledge as possible to keep the men under their command healthy. Together we will learn some basic First Aid and talk about the different natural medicines Lewis and Clark had at their disposal on the Expedition. \n[ninja_form id=’39’] \nStudents in Percy’s Pals will be divided into two groups\, based on school grade. Kindergarten through Second Grade will meet at 1:00 p.m.\, and Third through Fifth Grades will meet at 2:00 p.m. Each section of students will meet for one hour\, once a month to engage in a series of scientific adventures inspired by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Programs will include topics such as Jefferson’s gadgets\, mapmaking\, geology\, plant and animal classification\, and medicine and first aid.
