SUMMARY:Mary Queen of Scots: Triumph\, Tragedy\, and Ironic Immortality
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, September 20\, 2026\, at 2:00pm in the Betty Strong Encounter Center auditorium\, author and historian Scott Culpepper will lead a guided tour of Mary Queen of Scots’ (1542-1587) remarkable life and times in this interactive presentation. Admission is free\, but freewill donations encouraged. \nMary lived an ironic life marked by early triumph\, painful tragedy\, shocking scandals\, and a surprising posthumous victory. She inherited the Scottish throne as an infant and lost it as an adult only to have her heirs inherit the whole of England and Scotland. \nScott Culpepper is an author\, historian\, and speaker creatively exploring the history and mystery of human experiences. He holds a Ph.D. from Baylor University and specializes in the history of the early modern Atlantic world\, focusing on how fear and faith have shaped and been shaped by history from early modern Britain to modern America. The Demonologists’ Daughters\, his debut novel\, was published by Scotland Publications in 2024 and the sequel\, The Demonologists’ Legacy\, was released in 2025. His nonfiction book Francis Johnson and the English Separatist Influence was published by Mercer University Press in 2011. He teaches courses in history and religious studies at Dordt University in Iowa where he lives with his wife\, Ginger. SUMMARY:The Music of Crabgrass
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, October 4\, 2026\, at 2:00 pm\, at the Betty Strong Encounter Center\, get ready for some foot stompin’\, handclapin’ music as Crabgrass performs Traditional\, Bluegrass\, and Country Music.  Admission is free\, but freewill donations are encouraged. \nCrabgrass takes you back in time to the songs of the Grand Old Opry as Joan Wells and Kris Simon perform songs of the Carter family\, Bill Monroe\, Ralph Stanley\, Flatt & Scruggs\, Johnny Cash\, Loretta Lynn\, Patsy Cline\, and various other artists. Each tune is rich in arrangement\, and these musicians have years of performing experience. \nThe originator of Crabgrass\, Joan Wells\, a native of Seward NE from a musical\, artistic family\, sings and plays rhythm and lead guitar.  A Carroll IA native\, Kris Simon sings harmony\, plays bass\, and provides some comedy for the performance. Kris also performs “Cattle Trails and Songs of the West” through Humanities Nebraska Speakers Bureau. Joining them at this performance is Steve Hanson\, a Lincoln musician who was influenced by his musician parents. He began playing at age 13. He spent his career Steve teaches guitar\, mandolin\, and banjo. \nAltogether they are known as “Crabgrass\,” a unique sound inspired by their lover for real traditional music. Crabgrass is a Lincoln\, NE-based group who has performed for over ten years in the Lincoln and Omaha area. SUMMARY:The Trial of Standing Bear\, 1879 by Don Hickey
DESCRIPTION:On October 11\, 2026\, at 2:00pm at the Betty Strong Encounter Center\, Don Hickey\, a retired history professor and award-winning author\, will present an illustrated program on “The Trial of Standing Bear\, 1879.”  Admission is free\, but freewill donations are encouraged. \nHickey will tell the dramatic story of how a Ponca chief\, native to Nebraska\, sought to travel from Indian Territory to the Niobrara River to bury the remains of his son.  Arrested for leaving the reservation\, he was vindicated in a federal trial in Omaha when the presiding judge ruled that he was indeed a “person” under the law and thus entitled to live and travel wherever he chose. \nHickey holds a PhD from the University of Illinois and is a specialist in early American history and American military history. He is best known for his books\, The War of 1812: A Forgotten Conflict (University of Illinois Press) and Nebraska Moments: Glimpses of Nebraska’s Past (University of Nebraska Press). Admission is free\, but freewill donations are encouraged. \nMark Buckingham started playing guitar at age of 12. Playing rhythm guitar with his dad\, a Honky-tonk piano player\, Mark has played in many different places. While serving in the US Army\, Mark started playing banjo. He has been in a variety of band types\, including Bluegrass\, Americana\, and Country. \nCurrently\, Mark plays at various places: assisted living homes\, nursing homes\, music festivals\, and more.  Mark plays a variety of instruments\, including piano\, guitar\, bass\, harmonica\, lap steel guitar\, banjo\, and penny whistle. Admission is free\, but freewill donations are encouraged. \nHumbletown is a folk/bluegrass band featuring Morgan Carnes on clawhammer banjo\, Dylan Lewis on flatpick guitar and mandolin\, and James Schrag on upright bass. Lead vocalists Morgan Carnes and Dylan Lewis primarily write their own songs in eclectic styles\, but the band also plays traditional songs\, fiddle tunes\, and folk and country covers. \nHumbletown prides itself on unique harmonies and vibrant traditional and improvisational instrumentals.
