SUMMARY:Walt Peterson and the Ditchwater Bullfrogs
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, October 25\, 2026\, at 2:00pm in the Betty Strong Encounter Center auditorium\, come listen to The Ditchwater Bullfrogs\, a Sioux City\, Iowa-based\, multi-instrumental roots band. With over 125 years of combined musical experience\, the four-piece group playfully refuses to fit into a single musical genre\, blending upbeat bluegrass\, folk\, Americana\, Blues and original songs. Admission is free\, but freewill donations are encouraged. \nA defining trademark of the band is that all members take turns on lead vocals\, utilizing a massive arsenal of instruments including guitars\, mandolin\, harmonica\, banjo\, dobro and Bass. Their current and former lineup includes Walt Peterson (Mandolin\, harmonica\, vocals); Bob Larson (Guitar\, songwriter\, vocals)l; Scott Griffith (Banjo\, dobro\, singer-songwriter\, vocals); and Austin Aufrance (Guitar\, bass\, singer-songwriter\, vocals) \nThe Bullfrogs are a staple of the Siouxland regional music scene. They have been featured at local mainstays such as the River-Cade Bluegrass Music Fest at the Anderson Dance Pavilion\, the Alley Art Festival in downtown Sioux City\, and regular gigs at Vangarde Arts and Jackson Street Brewing East. \nThe band evolved from a local group called the “Central Time Band”. After the tragic passing of their main vocalist and guitarist\, Rick Borg\, in early 2021\, the surviving members took a hiatus. In 2022\, a jam session at Vangarde Arts open mic helped breathe new life into the project. They needed a name for a fast-approaching festival\, so they adopted “Ditchwater Bullfrogs;” a title derived from an original song written by Central Time’s Bob Larson in tribute to Rick Borg before he passed away. \nThe Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center/Betty Strong Encounter Center was built and is sustained by the Missouri River Historic Development Organization as a gift of history to the community. SUMMARY:Ornament Decorating at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center
DESCRIPTION:The Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center will host a free “Deck the Center: Holiday Ornament Decorating” from November 18 through December 22 during normal business hours. \nChildren are asked to stop in to decorate two wooden ornaments\, one to hang on the Center’s community tree and one to take home. Everyone is welcome to celebrate the start of the holiday season with us. \nCaptains Lewis and Clark and their men would have been unfamiliar with the tradition of hanging ornaments from evergreen trees. Christmas trees and decoration wouldn’t become popular in the United States until the mid-1800s. The Captains usually celebrated the holiday with a discharge of firearms\, singing and dancing\, small gifts exchange\, and “the best to eat that could be had” (according to Sgt. John Ordway). \nThe Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center/Betty Strong Encounter Center was built and is sustained by the Missouri River Historic Development Organization as a gift of history to the community. SUMMARY:Remembering JFK—And Why He Matters?
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, November 22\, 2026\, at 2 pm in the Lewis and Clark Betty Strong Interpretive Center\, Russ Gifford will present “Remembering JFK – And Why He Matters” It has been over six decades since JFK’s Presidency. He served less than a full term\, and his major legislative agenda was permanently stalled on Capitol Hill. What difference could he possibly have made that matters six decades later? The answer: more than you might think according to Russ Gifford. Admission is free\, but freewill donations are encouraged. \nRuss Gifford will recount the stories you know: the brinkmanship facing down Khrushchev and the Soviets. The confrontation and creation of the Berlin Wall. The harrowing moments leading to a bold decision after the Soviet missiles were discovered in Cuba. The fights with Congress over legislation were right but could not advance. His bold declaration that put us in the Space Race to reach the moon. His choice to put the prestige of the Presidency on the side of the Civil Rights battles. \nBut to most American’s today\, that’s ancient history. What does it matter now? “Kennedy’s Presidency – not his death\, but his presidency – set a new standard for every Presidency\,” says Gifford. He adds that we all recognize that campaign methods have been copied by everyone\, “but what we miss is more important: They might use his style to get elected. But if they do\, and ignore his message\, they become one term presidents.” “We recognize that Kennedy changed the formula on who will become President – specifically\, the use of the primaries to decide who will be considered at the national conventions. But more importantly\, he changed how we define what a successful president does\, and how he acts\, says Gifford. “It has been true for 50 years\,” he adds. \nBut today we also see a new reality. The torch is again passing to a new generation. Kennedy’s memory lives on\, but it is from passed down memories. The people that saw Kennedy as an actual president are now 70 or older. “Today’s candidates are no longer attempting to emulate a successful\, youthful president that captured the imagination of a generation of Americas.” \nJoin us at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center as Russ Gifford delves into the events and the era to see how Kennedy’s short time in office changed America forever. Gifford takes listeners back to the 1960s with stories and clips of events that Kennedy faced\, including the confrontations\, the close calls\, and why Kennedy saw that choice as important. Hear the whole story at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center on November 22. The program starts at 2:00 pm. \nRuss Gifford\, Senior Lecturer with Western Iowa Tech’s Institute for Lifelong Learning\, delivers tales of American history to audiences in the Siouxland region. His two decades of programs include over 400 unique talks\, including a focus on Leadership skills presented by various American Presidents. He has also published numerous articles and historical papers. His work garnered two teaching awards\, and his lectures have been supported by grants from Humanities Iowa\, the Kind World Foundation\, and others. \nThe Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center/Betty Strong Encounter Center was built and is sustained by the Missouri River Historic Development Organization as a gift of history to the community. SUMMARY:Merry TUBACHRISTMAS Concert
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, December 5\, the Betty Strong Encounter Center will host “Merry TUBACHRISTMAS\,” a concert featuring Siouxland area tuba and euphonium players\, at 1:00 pm. Admission is free\, but freewill donations are encouraged. \nThe audience will hear traditional Christmas carols arranged by composer Alec Wilder who died on Christmas Eve 1980. In addition to composing music for the tuba and euphonium\, Wilder was a loyal supporter of the efforts to improve the literature and public image of these instruments. \nAt the first TUBACHRISTMAS in 1973\, around 300 musicians showed up at the ice-skating rink at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City\, bearing their giant brass instruments. A massive\, all-tuba holiday concert was the brainchild of Harvey Phillips\, a tuba player and enthusiast who would go on to teach in the music school at Indiana University and start similar tuba-centric traditions such as “Octubafest.” \nTUBACHRISTMAS concerts have since popped up in practically every state. You can now enjoy the holiday stylings of amateur tuba ensembles in 296 U.S. communities\, from Anchorage\, Alaska to Hilo\, Hawaii. In 2018\, overachievers in Kansas City set a Guinness World Record. \nThe Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center/Betty Strong Encounter Center was built and is sustained by the Missouri River Historic Development Organization as a gift of history to the community.
