SUMMARY:Siouxland Inspirational & Historical Short Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 5th-annual Siouxland Inspirational & Historical Short Film Festival has expanded to two sessions this year in Sioux City\, Iowa. On Sunday\, November 17\, a selection of films will be shown in the auditorium at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. \n  \nFrom 11:00 to 1:00 p.m.\, a variety of locally\, regionally\, and nationally produced short films will be projected. They will include documentaries\, comedies\, and general interest flicks. After intermission\, a series of historical films will be shown starting at 2:00 p.m. \n  \nThe goal of the Siouxland Inspirational & Historical Short Film Festival is to showcase short films that are inspiring\, heartwarming\, thought-provoking\, family-friendly\, and entertaining. This festival offers a venue to show local films and those of other talented filmmakers from the region\, the U.S.\, and beyond.  The film festival seeks to be an alternative to the Hollywood sex\, violence and immorality permeating much of the movie industry \n  \nThe Siouxland Inspirational & Historical Short Film Festival is produced through the Siouxland Filmmakers Club.  Joseph McMahon\, president and founder of the filmmakers group\, will co-host the event. McMahon is an award-winning multimedia journalist and video photographer for KTIV Channel 4 TV in Sioux City. \n  \nThe founder of the film festival\, Tom Schoening\, will be the other host introducing the films. After retiring from a 40-year career in journalism\, photography\, corporate communications\, marketing and PR\, Schoening continues to use his skills for nonprofit organizations\, including the Sioux City Camera Club\, his Church\, and several other groups. \n

SUMMARY:New Horizon’s Band Concert at Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, December 1\, 2024\, holiday music will ring out when New Horizon’s Band of Sioux City presents its concert under the direction of Benjamin Mauritz at 2:00 pm at the Betty Strong Encounter Center. For this concert\, the band will play a variety of music including carols\, classical\, pop\, jazz\, and novelty pieces. Admission is free; a reception will follow. \n  \nThe New Horizon’s Band of Sioux City began more than 10 years ago with six members. The New Horizon’s Band currently consists of about 28 members from the Siouxland area. It is one of more than 200 U.S. programs in the New Horizon’s International Music Association\, which originated in 1991 at the Eastman School of Music\, Rochester\, NY. The Association’s sole purpose is to provide musical opportunities for adults. New Horizon’s Band of Sioux City includes musicians with limited experience as well as those who participated in high school or college bands.

SUMMARY:A "Merry TUBACHRISTMAS" Concert
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, December 7\, the Betty Strong Encounter Center will host “Merry TUBACHRISTMAS\,” a concert featuring Siouxland area tuba and euphonium players\, at 12:00 p.m. Admission is free. \nThe audience will hear traditional Christmas carols arranged by composer Alec Wilder who died on Christmas Eve 1980. In addition to composing music for the tuba and euphonium\, Wilder was a loyal supporter of the efforts to improve the literature and public image of these instruments. \nAt the first TubaChristmas in 1973\, around 300 musicians showed up at the ice-skating rink at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City\, bearing their giant brass instruments. A massive\, all-tuba holiday concert was the brainchild of Harvey Phillips\, a tuba player and enthusiast who would go on to teach in the music school at Indiana University and start similar tuba-centric traditions such as “Octubafest.” \nTubaChristmas concerts have since popped up in practically every state. You can now enjoy the holiday stylings of amateur tuba ensembles in 296 U.S. communities\, from Anchorage\, Alaska to Hilo\, Hawaii. In 2018\, overachievers in Kansas City set a Guinness World Record.

DESCRIPTION:Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center invites families to a special day of events on December 14\, 2024. \n  \nSanta at the Center will run from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm. During this event\, the children can decorate make-and-take ornaments. Each child receives two ornaments – one to take home\, and one to hang on the tree at the Center. There will also be various “reindeer games\,” hosted by Mrs. Claus. Families can also watch Christmas Cartoons in the Keelboat Theater. SUMMARY:Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest
DESCRIPTION:The Betty Strong Encounter Center will host as the Iowa Arts Council and National Endowment for the Arts in cooperation with LAMB Arts Regional Theatre present “Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest” at 2:00 p.m. Sunday\, January 12. Admission is free with reception to follow. \nThis is the 19th year since the National Endowment for the Arts first partnered with the Poetry Foundation to establish the Poetry Out Loud program\, a program encouraging high school students to learn great poetry through memorization and recitation.  This contest for Siouxland students encourages learning about great poetry through memorization and recitation and helps students master public speaking skills\, build self-confidence\, and learn about literary history. This competition can potentially send students on to Des Moines for the Iowa State Competition and one to Sioux Falls for the S.D. State Competition\, both held in March.  Each winner at the state level receives $200 and an all-expense paid trip with an adult chaperone to Washington DC to compete for the National Championship in May. The State winning school receives a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books.  The first runner up in each state receives $100 plus $200 for his or her school library. \nThe National Poetry Out Loud first place winner directly receives $20\,000\, the second place receives $10\,000 directly\, and third place receives $5\,000. The fourth through ninth place national winners each receive $1000.  All nine schools receive $500 for the purchase of poetry books for their libraries. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, January 19\, at 2:00pm\, join us as Brian Buckmeier and Darren Maurer discuss their “Dinosaurs of the Hell Creek” museum exhibit that will be at the Sioux City Museum from Feb. 1 to July 31. Admission is free; reception to follow. \nThe pair have been hunting and digging fossilized dinosaur bones from the Hell Creek formation for almost 30 years. The pair have found fossils from T-Rex\, triceratops\, edmontosaurus\, and several other species of late Cretaceous dinosaurs. Brian discovered a new species of dinosaur\, named Dracorex\, in 2003. He found the complete upper skull of the dinosaur which was something that was completely new in the paleontology world. Join us to hear about some of the fossils and an idea what will be contained in the exhibit. \nDarren Maurer is a nationally known artist/illustrator and adventure seeker. Maurer gained wide recognition for his work with Ducks Unlimited\, where he won a record six times and was Iowa Ducks Unlimited Artist of the Year six times. He lives in Sioux City with his wife\, ShLoe\, and has two daughters. \nBrian Buckmeier has been a private practice attorney for 37 years and a part-time magistrate judge for the past six years. Buckmeier hunts for fossils in South Dakota\, Wyoming\, and Montana primarily and has provided many finds of Hell Creek dinosaurs with his most significant find being a new species of dinosaur he found in 2003. He lives in Sioux City with his wife\, Frances\, and has two sons.

DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, January 26\, 2025\, at 2:00pm\, Russ Gifford will present about “50 Years of Big Names\, Great Music\, and Memorable Venues: Sioux City on the Music Circuit” Admission is free; reception to follow. \nIt was no accident that Sioux City spent decades as a key stop for some of music’s biggest names. Sioux City boasted venues with great stages\, big\, beautiful dance floors\, and all in a central location that provided the key train and travel connections to the world. Early radio in Siouxland also provided a major ability to reach people across the region. As one of the major cities in the Plains\, the second largest city in Iowa\, Sioux City was home to a variety of people. These people who could be moved by big bands\, country crooners\, smooth jazz singers and hot new stars. \n Move was a key point: Dancing was the draw of music\, and Sioux City’s dance facilities were second to none in the Midwest. Sioux City drew big names – and rave reviews – as they toured the country. In Sioux City\, the artists made connections! From the Skylon to Shore Acres\, the Rigadon to the Paddock\, the Tomba and the Turin Inn\, we will see the places and hear the stories of the names that made Sioux City a popular part of the music scene! We will also see how Sioux City made history in each era\, including Jazz\, Swing\, and the groundswell that became Rock n Roll! \n None of this was by accident. Sioux City was not a side bar but a key location for great performances\, thanks to great locations\, great promotions\, and great audiences! \nWe will meet names from yesterday that made memories for millions\, from Louie Armstrong to Elvis\, big bands to the Beach Boys\, Sioux City enticed\, entertained\, and elated the stars of the stage. Early radio in Siouxland also provided a major ability to reach people across the region. As one of the major cities in the Plains\, the second largest city in Iowa\, Sioux City was home to a variety of people. These people who could be moved by big bands\, country crooners\, smooth jazz singers and hot new stars. \n  \nMove was a key point: Dancing was the draw of music\, and Sioux City’s dance facilities were second to none in the Midwest. Sioux City drew big names – and rave reviews – as they toured the country. In Sioux City\, the artists made connections! From the Skylon to Shore Acres\, the Rigadon to the Paddock\, the Tomba and the Turin Inn\, we will see the places and hear the stories of the names that made Sioux City a popular part of the music scene! We will also see how Sioux City made history in each era\, including Jazz\, Swing\, and the groundswell that became Rock n Roll! \n  \nNone of this was by accident. Sioux City was not a side bar but a key location for great performances\, thanks to great locations\, great promotions\, and great audiences! \nWe will meet names from yesterday that made memories for millions\, from Louie Armstrong to Elvis\, big bands to the Beach Boys\, Sioux City enticed\, entertained\, and elated the stars of the stage. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, February 2\, 2025\, come listen to talented singer/songwriter Michael “Mac” McDonald present a concert of tunes he has written for some of the finest cowboy poems of the Great Northern Plains\, featuring cowboy poetry of E. A. Brininstool\, Badger Clark\, E. A. L. Griffin\, and Robert V. Carr. Admission is free; reception to follow. \nMac has a lengthy history of playing music in the Siouxland area from days of the Kerry House at Junction City\, to being the voice of live Irish music on KUSD-FM on Saint Patrick’s Day\, and to working with the South Dakota Friends of Old Time Music. McDonald often plays tunes with his daughter\, Heather\, performing at the South Dakota State Fair as well as at three Sioux Falls’ Irish Fests\, a Kansas City Irish Fest\, and an Iowa Irish Fest. \nMcDonald wrote a program of Lewis and Clark tunes for the 2002 bicentennial\, and the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center soon contacted McDonald to perform his program for the new Center featuring his tune\, “The Lament of Charles Floyd.” Recently\, McDonald has been reading a great deal of cowboy poetry from the late nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries and taking those poems and turning them into modern-day “nighthawk tunes\,” tunes that cowboys sang to their bedded herds of cattle sung to keep the cattle from being spooked by night noises. Pelchat has been performing in the Midwest for over five decades. “Chopper’s” induction into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008 and 2011 goes to show “Chopper” is a well-respected showman. \n\nPelchat’s bands have opened for The Board of Directors\, Bobby Vee\, War\, The Drifters and BJ Thomas. Over the past years\, he has continued to perform with the Sioux Falls country rock band The Huckleberrys\, and with the passing of Bob Dawdy the world famous Velaires.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Scott Culpepper will present “Cotton Mather: Spirituality\, Science\, and the Supernatural” at 2:00 PM on Sunday\, February 23\, 2025\, at the Betty Strong Encounter Center. Admission is free with a reception to follow. \nCotton Mather (1663-1728) wielded tremendous influence in colonial America as the heir to the Mather and Cotton family dynasties. He served as a Congregationalist minister at Boston’s Old North Meeting House\, using his platform to address political\, scientific\, and social issues. Mather captured the controversies and contradictions of his age in his writings and activism. His investigations into supernatural phenomenon were conducted alongside rigorous scientific studies and public endorsement of inoculation as a means to combat smallpox. This presentation will explore Mather’s many facets and complicated legacy. \nCulpepper holds a Ph.D. in Religion and Church/State Studies from Baylor University; a Master of Arts in History from Northwestern State University of Louisiana; a Master of Divinity with an emphasis in historical and theological studies from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary; and a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Religious Education from Louisiana College.

Randy sings\, plays drums and keyboard lead and Donna sings and plays guitar and bass. \nRandy and Donna have been playing together in bands since 1979. They were the founding members of the country/pop band “Prairie Fire” that played parties and nightclubs in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Missouri and Minnesota. \nThey did a Midwest tour in 1988 with a group called “Radio Flyers” and later became members of the party band “Time Bandits”.   As their children became teenagers they worked with them in a horn band called “Nightwatch” playing town celebrations\, county fairs and private parties. \nRandy and Donna are retired music teachers that formed the current duo after retirement.  Radio Rangers has played wineries\, night clubs\, parties and celebrations in Iowa\, Nebraska\, South Dakota\, Minnesota\, Arizona and Florida.

SUMMARY:Just Before the Battle Mother- A Visit from a Civil War Soldier
DESCRIPTION:The Betty Strong Encounter Center has received funding from Humanities Iowa\, a private\, non-profit\, to host a presentation called “Just Before the Battle Mother- A Visit from a Civil War Soldier.” by O.J. Fargo on March 9\, 2025\, at 2:00pm. A cultural resource for Iowans since 1971\, Humanities Iowa offers many cultural and historical programs and grants to Iowa’s communities. Admission is free; reception to follow. \nAfter an overview of Iowa’s involvement in the Civil War\, the audience is introduced to a returning Civil War soldier (played by Mr. Fargo). The audience is encouraged to ask questions and engage in a dialogue with the “soldier” who will stay in character. The speaker will bring along an artifact display and full computerized and searchable roster of all men who served in and from Iowa in the Civil war to enable the participants to check for ancestors who served. Mr. Fargo dresses in full Union Army regalia for the presentation and focuses the presentation on an individual soldier’s experience. \nThis program is made possible via Humanities Iowa.  O. J. has done more than 100 history presentations throughout the state for Humanities Iowa including historical societies\, libraries\, schools\, professional organizations and many other groups. \nIn addition to being a Humanities Iowa speaker since 1998\, he is the author of three books and editor of two CD-ROMs containing 320\,000 pages of searchable text and 10\,000 Civil War pictures. He is a contributor to several Iowa history web sites and maintains one on Iowa in the Civil War aimed at students and teachers. \nO. J. is a retired Social Studies consultant and Director of Support Services. He became a reenactor in 1993 and got into the hobby because of his love of history and the opportunity to interact with others of like interests. Although retired he continues to teach classes and do talks. Mr. Fargo. is also the president of the Army of the Southwest\, a group of Civil War reenactors headquartered in Waukee. \nThe presentation is free and open to the public.  Refreshments will be served.  A list of all Civil War soldiers from the area will be available at the library for those who might want to see if a distant relative fought on those hallowed battlefields 150+ years ago.  Please join us for the interesting presentation.

His latest book\, Tecumseh’s War: The Epic Conflict for the Heart of America\, (Westholme Publishing) was published in 2023.
