SUMMARY:Percy’s Pals: Zoomobile
DESCRIPTION:Zoo critters are coming to the Sioux City Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center! On May 3\, 2025\, the Sioux Falls Zoomobile will lead a 45-minute sit-down program featuring live animals. This program will begin at 11:00am in the Betty Strong Encounter Center auditorium. Admission is free and the event is appropriate for all ages. \nAudience members will have the chance to meet a few charismatic animals under the supervision of Sioux Falls zookeepers. The program will focus on reptiles and invertebrates\, their characteristics and special creature features. They will discuss what their habitat is like and what it looks like to take care of each beautiful\, unique animal. \nDuring the Lewis and Clark Expedition\, the explorers were mesmerized by the diverse and colorful wildlife in the Louisiana Territory. The expedition had many exciting and sometimes precarious encounters with animals like grizzly bears. The explorers’ journals are among the earliest natural history books about animals west of the Mississippi River. \nFor any questions or concerns\, please email Elizabeth Albright (ealbright@siouxcitylcic.com) or Kristine Bornholtz (kbornholtz@siouxcitylcic.com) or call 712-224-5242.

SUMMARY:Up the Nebraska Cattle Trail and Songs of the West
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, May 18\, 2025\, at 2:00 pm\, the Betty Strong Encounter Center is thrilled to welcome Joan Wells and Kris Simon as they travel and sing “Up the Nebraska Cattle Trail and Songs of the West.” Admission is free with a reception to follow. \nIn 1867\, and with a surplus of cattle in Texas\, cattle drives brought hundreds of thousands of cattle to Nebraska. Herds were gathered near San Antonio\, Texas and driven up the Western Trail to Ogallala\, Nebraska. During these four-month long drives cowboys would pass the time singing about life on the trail and to calm the cattle the night. \nJoan Wells and Kris Simon share about the cattle drives and the origin of western music while singing the songs of the early day cowboys.

SUMMARY:Kids What’s on Wednesday: Native Games
DESCRIPTION:At the Betty Strong Encounter Center on May 21\, 2025\, the kids WOW event will be a fabulous hands-on session where kids can learn about and play Native games. The event is free to all. \nTraditional Native games had many purposes: bringing people together\, stimulating social interaction\, teaching skills\, patience\, and endurance\, qualities important to being a good person. \nFew of the games were meant to be played alone. Capturing the spectacle and the excitement\, along with the humorous things that happen in the course of a game was more important than focusing on the rules.
