SUMMARY:Loess Hills Audubon Society by Marla Kerr
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, January 18\, 2026\, at 2:00pm\, learn about the Loess Hills Audubon Society and Bird Friendly Iowa in a short presentation by Marla Kerr\, President of the Loess Hills Audubon Society. Admission is free\, but freewill donations are encouraged. \nThe Loess Hills Audubon Society will also have a member and friends’ Loess Hills Nature Photography Slideshow running in the atrium and during a reception following the program. The slide show is in conjunction with their photo exhibit\, A River Runs Through It\, on display in the gallery of the Betty Strong Encounter Center from Tuesday\, January 13\, 2026\, through February 22\, 2026. The exhibit features photography by Loess Hills Audubon Society members and friends: Carey Anderson\, Lance Bisbois\, Seth Brooks\, Ed Hohenstein\, Bill Huser\, Kevin and Marla Kerr\, Mary Klauer\, Tucker Lutter\, Jerry Mennenga\, Jan Null\, Rex Rundquist\, Rob Towler\, and Todd Wheelock. \nBirding has been a popular pastime in the Sioux City area since the early 1900’s when the Sioux City Bird Club (SCBC) was organized in 1913.  The purpose of the club was to encourage interest in the identification and study of birds\, their flights\, migration\, habitat and the protection and conservation of natural resources related to birds and other wildlife. Copies of their programs\, field trips\, bird counts\, banquet programs and other activities as well as copies of the SCBC quarterly publication The Dickcissel\, have been archived at the Sioux City Public Museum.  This material was donated to the museum by Bob and Phyllis Nickolson. \nThe SCBC ceased operating as a birding organization.  However\, a group of people remained interested in birding\, which led to the organization of the Sioux City Chapter of the National Audubon Society.  This group obtained a Provisional Charter from the National Audubon Society. The Sioux City Chapter of the Audubon Society became the Loess Hills Audubon Society (LHAS) when the chapter was officially incorporated by the Secretary of State of Iowa on June 1\, 1984. \nThe Loess Hills Audubon Society generally meets on the first Thursday of the month\, from September through May\, with chapter outings to the best birding locations within Siouxland taking place every month.
