SUMMARY:Legacies of Resistance and Resilience in Occupied France
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, March 1\, 2026\, at 2:00pm in the Betty Strong Encounter Center auditorium\, Dr. Scott Culpepper will present a fascinating look at Legacies of Resistance and Resilience in Occupied France. Admission is free\, but freewill donations encouraged. \nThe fall of France in 1940 created a challenging situation for citizens now living under a collaborationist government and\, in some places\, direct Nazi control. Many French citizens risked their lives to challenge Nazi control of France in large and small ways\, contributing to the overall allied effort to liberate Western Europe. Dr. Scott Culpepper will delve into this history that inspired his novel The Demonologists’ Legacy by illustrating life under the Vichy regime and featuring selected stories of people who joined the resistance against it. He will be signing copies of his novels on Saturday\, February 28 at Barnes & Noble from 1-4\, and audience members can also bring their copies to be signed at the Encounter Center after the presentation. \nK. Scott Culpepper is an author\, historian\, and speaker creatively exploring the history and mystery of human experiences. He holds a Ph.D. from Baylor University and specializes in the history of the early modern Atlantic world\, focusing on how fear and faith have shaped and been shaped by history from early modern Britain to modern America. The Demonologists’ Daughters\, his debut novel\, was published by Scotland Publications in 2024 and the sequel\, The Demonologists’ Legacy\, was released in 2025. His nonfiction book Francis Johnson and the English Separatist Influencewas published by Mercer University Press in 2011. He teaches courses in history and religious studies at Dordt University in Iowa where he lives with his wife\, Ginger. He loves history\, spooky tales\, reading\, writing\, swimming\, and spending time with his amazing family.

SUMMARY:"Plow in the Oak" song cycle Radio Rangers
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, March 8\, 2026\, at 2:00pm\, the talented music duo Radio Rangers aside from playing favorites will debut their original song cycle about an Iowa legend\, “Plow in the Oak.”  Admission is free\, but freewill donations encouraged. \nJust outside of the Iowa town of Exira there is a horse drawn plow which an oak tree has grown around. The legend is that a young farmer was plowing in his field as the Iowa regulars (Union Soldiers) marched by. He leaned his plow against a sapling oak tree and joined them as they marched off to the Civil War; however\, he never returned. \nRadio Rangers are a two-piece band playing live music that includes Americana original songs\, and classic covers. Randy sings\, plays drums and keyboard lead and Donna sings and plays guitar and bass. They have released three albums of original songs and have recently completed “The Plow in the Oak” Song Cycle. \nRandy and Donna have been playing together in bands since 1979. They were the founding members of the country/pop band “Prairie Fire” that played parties and nightclubs in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Missouri\, and Minnesota.  They did a Midwest tour in 1988 with a group called “Radio Flyers” and later became members of the party band “Time Bandits.” As their children became teenagers\, they worked with them in a horn band called “Nightwatch” playing town celebrations\, county fairs and private parties. \nRandy and Donna are retired music teachers who formed the current duo after retirement.  Radio Rangers has played wineries\, clubs\, parties and celebrations in Iowa\, Nebraska\, South Dakota\, Minnesota\, Arizona and Florida

Admission is free\, but freewill donations encouraged. \nFiddler Bill Peterson and his friends John Everist\, Josh Scott and Mike Pettman will present a concert of Irish traditional music. John is the guitarist in the band\, Josh is a fiddler\, and Mike plays accordion and concertina. \nJohn and Bill played for several years in the Sioux Falls Ceili Band\, the band played at McNally’s Irish Pub for 14 years and for many more years for Irish dancing at the Old Courthouse Museum in Sioux Falls. Josh and Mike currently play with the Rowena Ceil Band and have recently joined forces with Bill and John. John’s family is of Irish descent and were early arrivals in Sioux City and Jackson\, Nebraska.

SUMMARY:Splendor in the Brass
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, March 29\, 2026\, at 2:00pm the Betty Strong Encounter Center welcomes back the Floyd Valley Brass Quintet who will present “Splendor in the Brass.” The group is excited to play here again and their show will include a variety of entertaining music. Admission is free\, but freewill donations encouraged. \nThe members of the quintet are the following:  Kevin Linder~trumpet: Kevin is an accomplished trumpet player performing and teaching students from high school through university level throughout N.W. Iowa. In addition\, Kevin is the director of the Prairie Winds Jazz Band. \nMichael Prichard~trumpet: Michael is the band director at the Le Mars Community High School and is the conductor of the Sioux City Municipal Band in the summer. He is active in many professional music organizations in Iowa. \nRichard Ziettlow~ French Horn: Richard was a student of Mr. Brice in Le Mars and was a member of the Iowa All-State Band.  He is also a Le Mars Chamber of Commerce board member and President of the Le Mars Community Daycare Center Board of Directors. Currently\, he serves as Chairman of the Historic Preservation Committee of the City of Le Mars. \nBrad Pick~ trombone: Brad is an officer at Prime Bank in Le Mars.  He was also a graduate of Le Mars high school and was selected for the Iowa All-State Band. He also serves on the Le Mars City Council. \nRolyn Beaird~ tuba: Rolyn is a highly sought-after tuba player throughout the area and travels as a representative for Popplers Music in Sioux Falls\, SD. \nThe Floyd Valley Brass quintet was formed early in 2025 under the direction of Joe Brice.  Mr. Brice was director of bands at Le Mars Community Schools high school from 1959-1974.  He then was band director at Cherry Creek School District in S.E. suburban Denver before returning to Le Mars in 2024.
