DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, June 28\, at 7:00pm\, on the Spirit of Discovery Outdoor Stage\, Noah Towns and friends will play the “Music of the Blues in the Night.” \nThe audience will be positioned in a grassy area of Center’s campus\, so are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets\, as well as refreshments. \nTowns is the head Choir Director at Sioux City West High School and a Morningside College graduate. Towns\, a singer and keyboard player\, believes in the power of music to heal and uplift people.

DESCRIPTION:In this lesson\, students will discover the importance of shared and family meals\, meal and snack planning and making good choices when dining in restaurants. They will engage in practice-based activities where they use photo cards and mock menus to make realistic and healthful choices. To extend the lesson and involve their families\, students will also receive “Not so Fast … Make a Game Plan for Eating Out” activity sheet and a “Stock Your Kitchen for Healthy Snacking” information sheet to share with their family. \nThe Growers’ Academy is a sixteen-week course which includes classes on topics such as soil preparation\, nutrition\, and community responsibility. Each class includes a 45-minute classroom lesson and 45 minutes working in the Center’s new Community Garden. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, June 23\, 2024\, at 2:00pm\, in the Betty Strong Encounter Center auditorium\, the group Selskap will present a program of Scandinavian Love Songs. Songs of arranged marriages\, May-December marriages and the story of mail order brides from Sioux City for the Norwegian bachelors in Lincoln County\, South Dakota! \nSelskap members include Tom Weisbecker – harmonica\, mandolin\, and guitar; Ron Johnson – the box and vocals; Barbara Sabella – guitar and vocals; and Bill Peterson – fiddle. They play every June at the Midsummer Celebration at Dalesburg Lutheran Church in Clay County\, South Dakota. The Swedes there have been celebrating Midsummer since 1868 when the 1st Swedish settlers came there\, many of them passing through Sioux City on the way west to claim land under the Homestead Act.
