DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, March 8\, 2026\, at 2:00pm\, the talented music duo Radio Rangers aside from playing favorites will debut their original song cycle about an Iowa legend\, “Plow in the Oak.”  Admission is free\, but freewill donations encouraged. \nJust outside of the Iowa town of Exira there is a horse drawn plow which an oak tree has grown around. The legend is that a young farmer was plowing in his field as the Iowa regulars (Union Soldiers) marched by. Randy sings\, plays drums and keyboard lead and Donna sings and plays guitar and bass. They have released three albums of original songs and have recently completed “The Plow in the Oak” Song Cycle. \nRandy and Donna have been playing together in bands since 1979. They were the founding members of the country/pop band “Prairie Fire” that played parties and nightclubs in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Missouri\, and Minnesota.  They did a Midwest tour in 1988 with a group called “Radio Flyers” and later became members of the party band “Time Bandits.” As their children became teenagers\, they worked with them in a horn band called “Nightwatch” playing town celebrations\, county fairs and private parties. \nRandy and Donna are retired music teachers who formed the current duo after retirement.  Radio Rangers has played wineries\, clubs\, parties and celebrations in Iowa\, Nebraska\, South Dakota\, Minnesota\, Arizona and Florida

SUMMARY:Legacies of Resistance and Resilience in Occupied France
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, March 1\, 2026\, at 2:00pm in the Betty Strong Encounter Center auditorium\, Dr. Scott Culpepper will present a fascinating look at Legacies of Resistance and Resilience in Occupied France. Admission is free\, but freewill donations encouraged. \nThe fall of France in 1940 created a challenging situation for citizens now living under a collaborationist government and\, in some places\, direct Nazi control. Scott Culpepper is an author\, historian\, and speaker creatively exploring the history and mystery of human experiences. He holds a Ph.D. from Baylor University and specializes in the history of the early modern Atlantic world\, focusing on how fear and faith have shaped and been shaped by history from early modern Britain to modern America. The Demonologists’ Daughters\, his debut novel\, was published by Scotland Publications in 2024 and the sequel\, The Demonologists’ Legacy\, was released in 2025. His nonfiction book Francis Johnson and the English Separatist Influencewas published by Mercer University Press in 2011. He teaches courses in history and religious studies at Dordt University in Iowa where he lives with his wife\, Ginger. He loves history\, spooky tales\, reading\, writing\, swimming\, and spending time with his amazing family.

Copies of their programs\, field trips\, bird counts\, banquet programs and other activities as well as copies of the SCBC quarterly publication The Dickcissel\, have been archived at the Sioux City Public Museum.  This material was donated to the museum by Bob and Phyllis Nickolson. \nThe SCBC ceased operating as a birding organization.  However\, a group of people remained interested in birding\, which led to the organization of the Sioux City Chapter of the National Audubon Society.  This group obtained a Provisional Charter from the National Audubon Society. The Sioux City Chapter of the Audubon Society became the Loess Hills Audubon Society (LHAS) when the chapter was officially incorporated by the Secretary of State of Iowa on June 1\, 1984. \nThe Loess Hills Audubon Society generally meets on the first Thursday of the month\, from September through May\, with chapter outings to the best birding locations within Siouxland taking place every month. SUMMARY:Merry TUBACHRISTMAS Concert
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, December 6\, the Betty Strong Encounter Center will host “Merry TUBACHRISTMAS\,” a concert featuring Siouxland area tuba and euphonium players\, at Noon (12:00 pm). Admission is free\, but freewill donations are encouraged. \nThe audience will hear traditional Christmas carols arranged by composer Alec Wilder who died on Christmas Eve 1980. In addition to composing music for the tuba and euphonium\, Wilder was a loyal supporter of the efforts to improve the literature and public image of these instruments. \nAt the first TubaChristmas in 1973\, around 300 musicians showed up at the ice-skating rink at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City\, bearing their giant brass instruments. A massive\, all-tuba holiday concert was the brainchild of Harvey Phillips\, a tuba player and enthusiast who would go on to teach in the music school at Indiana University and start similar tuba-centric traditions such as “Octubafest.” \nTubaChristmas concerts have since popped up in practically every state. You can now enjoy the holiday stylings of amateur tuba ensembles in 296 U.S. communities\, from Anchorage\, Alaska to Hilo\, Hawaii. In 2018\, overachievers in Kansas City set a Guinness World Record. \nFor those interested in performing visit https://sites.google.com/view/sctubachristmas for updated performances and information.

SUMMARY:Discoveries With Lewis and Clark: "It's Good To Be Home!"
DESCRIPTION:The final adventure in this 6-week expedition\, Discoveries With Lewis and Clark\, begins on Saturday\, November 22.  Students currently in grades K-5 can attend at 10:30am or at 12:30pm.  Admission is free; no registration required. \nAt the end of a long journey\, almost everyone in the Corp of Discovery returned to receive great praise and rewards. Students will recap their journey\, evaluating the decisions they made along the way\, and gather their collections to take along with them to their homes\, wherever that may be. \nIf you have questions\, contact Amy Linder at 712-224-5242 or email alinder@siouxcitylcic.com.
