SUMMARY:Percy's Pals: Jefferson's Codes & Gadgets / Treasure Hunt
DESCRIPTION:We all know that Thomas Jefferson was one of the framers of the United States government. Some of us know that he was responsible for sending Lewis and Clark across the North American continent. But you may be surprised to learn just how scientific President Jefferson was – he was constantly making gadgets and conducting experiments. We will learn about President Jefferson’s secret codes and a device he made to crack his codes\, which he called a “cipher.” Students will then go on a treasure hunt to earn a special prize by solving various clues using the information they’ve learned during the Percy’s Pals spring/summer series! \n[ninja_form id=’39’] \nStudents in Percy’s Pals will be divided into two groups\, based on school grade. Kindergarten through Second Grade will meet at 1:00 p.m.\, and Third through Fifth Grades will meet at 2:00 p.m. Each section of students will meet for one hour\, once a month to engage in a series of scientific adventures inspired by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Programs will include topics such as Jefferson’s gadgets\, mapmaking\, geology\, plant and animal classification\, and medicine and first aid.

SUMMARY:Percy's Pals: Tools & Techniques
DESCRIPTION:The Lewis and Clark Expedition was a really big adventure! But did you ever wonder what kinds of tools the Corps of Discovery would have had with them? Did you ever wonder how they built forts\, made burned-out canoes\, and even mended or made their own clothing? We will discover a lot of different tasks the Corps of Discovery had to do every day\, and we will discuss the tools and techniques they used to accomplish it all. Students will even make and take home a Lewis and Clark tool of their own! \nOur 45-minute sessions typically include a storybook and/or short video\, digitally interactive lessons\, and a hands-on craft or activity. By catering to multiple learning styles during each session\, students are more likely to store what they learn in their long-term memory\, and also have a LOT of fun! \nREGISTER HERE!\n[ninja_form id=’39’]

SUMMARY:“Thomas Jefferson\, Our Third President”
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning author and historian Don Hickey will deliver an illustrated lecture on Jefferson at the Betty Strong Encounter Center at 2:00 PM on October 27\, 2024.  Admission is free with a reception to follow. \nThomas Jefferson\, a Renaissance man with broad interests and a powerful intellect\, was known as the apostle of freedom because he wrote the Declaration of Independence\, was co-founder (with James Madison) of the Democratic party and promoted “an empire for liberty” with the Louisiana purchase.  But he also supported slavery\, led the campaign to dispossess the Indians in the Old Northwest\, and favored the ruthless use of government power in support of the disastrous 15-month embargo that marred his second term as president.  This illustrated presentation will examine the highlights of Jefferson’s life and service and seek to reach a balanced assessment of his record as an American statesman. \nHickey holds a PhD from the University of Illinois and is a specialist in early American history and American military history. He is best known for his books\, The War of 1812: A Forgotten Conflict (University of Illinois Press) and Nebraska Moments: Glimpses of Nebraska’s Past (University of Nebraska Press). His latest book\, Tecumseh’s War: The Epic Conflict for the Heart of America\, (Westholme Publishing) was published in 2023.

SUMMARY:A "Merry TUBACHRISTMAS" Concert
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, December 7\, the Betty Strong Encounter Center will host “Merry TUBACHRISTMAS\,” a concert featuring Siouxland area tuba and euphonium players\, at 12:00 p.m. Admission is free. \nThe audience will hear traditional Christmas carols arranged by composer Alec Wilder who died on Christmas Eve 1980. In addition to composing music for the tuba and euphonium\, Wilder was a loyal supporter of the efforts to improve the literature and public image of these instruments. \nAt the first TubaChristmas in 1973\, around 300 musicians showed up at the ice-skating rink at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City\, bearing their giant brass instruments. A massive\, all-tuba holiday concert was the brainchild of Harvey Phillips\, a tuba player and enthusiast who would go on to teach in the music school at Indiana University and start similar tuba-centric traditions such as “Octubafest.” \nTubaChristmas concerts have since popped up in practically every state. You can now enjoy the holiday stylings of amateur tuba ensembles in 296 U.S. communities\, from Anchorage\, Alaska to Hilo\, Hawaii. In 2018\, overachievers in Kansas City set a Guinness World Record.
