SUMMARY:The Trial of Standing Bear\, 1879 by Don Hickey
DESCRIPTION:On October 11\, 2026\, at 2:00pm at the Betty Strong Encounter Center\, Don Hickey\, a retired history professor and award-winning author\, will present an illustrated program on “The Trial of Standing Bear\, 1879.”  Admission is free\, but freewill donations are encouraged. \nHickey will tell the dramatic story of how a Ponca chief\, native to Nebraska\, sought to travel from Indian Territory to the Niobrara River to bury the remains of his son.  Arrested for leaving the reservation\, he was vindicated in a federal trial in Omaha when the presiding judge ruled that he was indeed a “person” under the law and thus entitled to live and travel wherever he chose. \nHickey holds a PhD from the University of Illinois and is a specialist in early American history and American military history. He is best known for his books\, The War of 1812: A Forgotten Conflict (University of Illinois Press) and Nebraska Moments: Glimpses of Nebraska’s Past (University of Nebraska Press). His latest book\, Tecumseh’s War: The Epic Conflict for the Heart of America\, (Westholme Publishing) was published in 2023. \nThe Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center/Betty Strong Encounter Center was built and is sustained by the Missouri River Historic Development Organization as a gift of history to the community. DESCRIPTION:On October 18\, 2026\, at 2:00pm the Betty Strong Encounter Center welcomes talented guitar player/singer Mark Buckingham. Admission is free\, but freewill donations are encouraged. \nMark Buckingham started playing guitar at age of 12. Playing rhythm guitar with his dad\, a Honky-tonk piano player\, Mark has played in many different places. While serving in the US Army\, Mark started playing banjo. He has been in a variety of band types\, including Bluegrass\, Americana\, and Country. \nCurrently\, Mark plays at various places: assisted living homes\, nursing homes\, music festivals\, and more.  Mark plays a variety of instruments\, including piano\, guitar\, bass\, harmonica\, lap steel guitar\, banjo\, and penny whistle. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday October 25\, 2026\, at 2:00pm in the Betty Strong Encounter Center\, come enjoy a musical performance by the band Humbletown. Admission is free\, but freewill donations are encouraged. \nHumbletown is a folk/bluegrass band featuring Morgan Carnes on clawhammer banjo\, Dylan Lewis on flatpick guitar and mandolin\, and James Schrag on upright bass. Lead vocalists Morgan Carnes and Dylan Lewis primarily write their own songs in eclectic styles\, but the band also plays traditional songs\, fiddle tunes\, and folk and country covers. \nHumbletown prides itself on unique harmonies and vibrant traditional and improvisational instrumentals.
