The Sioux City Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center (“the Center”) announces the schedule of events to be held on its campus the week of July 24.
Leading off the week with a brand new offering is the third of the Center’s Tuesdays for You series guests, Amber Hobbs. Hobbs opened her business Growing Up Lulu, a fiber arts shop in Sergeant Bluff, in September of 2022. The shop carries yarn, macrame cord, embroidery thread, weaving supplies, and the tools and accessories shoppers need to produce their own unique fiber creations. Hobbs also offers workshops out of her business for customers interested in taking up a new hobby or getting better at an established one.
On Tuesday, July 25, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Hobbs will offer a beginning knitter’s class in the Betty Strong Encounter Center’s multipurpose room. She will have basic knitting kits available for Center guests to purchase for $15. Guests who prefer to bring their own supplies are encouraged to do so. The Betty Strong Encounter Center will remain open until 7:00 that evening.
Notes Executive Director Tracy Bennett, “We’re experimenting with extended hours of operation and starting to collaborate in small and large ways with area businesses and other organizations. Through these initiatives, we are hoping to draw new people to the Center. Amber has been kind enough to act as one of our first featured guests. She has a unique business and we are happy to do what we can to help her raise Growing Up Lulu’s public profile.”
Rounding out the rest of the week at the Center are:
- Wednesday, July 26: Exploration Wednesdays continue with a 9:30 class for K-3rd Graders called “Lewis and Clark Escape Room” and an 11:00 class for 4th-6th Graders where they are invited to “Solve Lewis and Clark’s Puzzle.”
- Thursday, July 27: Area musicians and music appreciators are invited to the Betty Strong Encounter Center’s auditorium for a jam session from 1:00 to 4:00.
- Sunday, July 30:
- From 12:00 to 2:00, historian Jim Tillman, who lectured at the Center in February, will sign copies of his book, “The History of African American Publications from 1899-2023.”
- From 2:00 to 3:00 in the Betty Strong Encounter Center auditorium, Dr. Scott Culpepper will present “Eleanor Roosevelt: First Lady of the World.” Audience members are invited to attend a reception after the program.
- Beginning at 3:00, there will be a reception for artist Betty Skewis-Arnett, a selection of whose oil paintings will go on display in our main gallery on July 25.
Admission to all events is free to the public. Businesses interested in collaborating with the Center in a variety of ways can find information here.
