The Center announces its programming for the weekend of Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
On Saturday, Sept. 30, the Center continues its Adventure Saturdays series for children with a class and related activities featuring Ballet Folklorico, a Siouxland dance troupe that Rosa Losa founded more than 20 years ago for family members. The troupe currently has 45 dancers from several elementary and high schools in Sioux City and South Sioux City, ranging in age from 12 to 17 years. The volunteer troupe has entertained for various local fundraisers, performed at the Des Moines Latin Festival and traveled to Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska and Watertown and Mitchell, South Dakota.
The celebration of Hispanic culture is a continuation of the series’ emphasis on cultural education and appreciation. While the two sessions cover similar materials, the classes are appropriately tailored to each age group. Class size is limited and registration is required. Parents may register their children for this and other classes in the series on the Center’s website. K-3rd Grade classes begin at 1:00, and 4-6th Grade classes begin at 2:30.
On Sunday, Oct. 1, at 2:00, Center audiences will have an opportunity to experience the Andean cultures of Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru and Chile through an acoustic journey and storytelling. Oscar Rios Pohirieth, founder and director of the award-winning Lincoln-based Andean musical group Kusi Taki (Quechua for Enchanting Music), will play traditional South American instruments including the Quena (flute), Zampoñas (panpipes), Charango (ten-stringed small guitar) and Bombo (goatskin drum) and sing in Spanish and Quechua to bring alive the cultures and history of the indigenous peoples of the Andes.
