The Center announces its schedule of events for the week of August 7, 2023.
On Tuesday, August 8, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., the Center continues its Tuesdays for You series, during which it stays open beyond its normal operating hours to invite a guest to share a presentation, lead a discussion, teach a class, or talk about a new or established local business. This week’s featured guest will be Sue Owens, Lifelong Learning Coordinator at WITCC. She will describe how self-initiated education that is focused on personal development outside a formal educational institution can benefit everyone. This event will be held in the Betty Strong Encounter Center; the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center will not be available to visitors after 5:00.
On Friday, August 11, at 10:00 a.m., the Center is pleased to provide a venue for Kofi Dennis, a traditional African drummer, entertainer, and storyteller. Dennis acquired his education and began his career in Ghana, West Africa. There, he taught academics and led performing arts programs at schools, correctional facilities, orphanages, and child-care facilities.
In 1995, Dennis moved to the Washington, DC area, where he has taught and entertained as a drummer, storyteller, singer, and dancer at the Kennedy Center and Smithsonian Folklife Festival, among other venues.
His program at the Center will feature traditional African drumming and storytelling, and is perfect for preschool and elementary school-aged children and their families.
On Sunday, August 13, at 2:00, the Betty Strong Encounter Center has another treat in store for children (and adults), as it presents Magic Man Corey Fravel, a Center regular and favorite. Audience members should prepare to be dazzled by Fravel’s sleights of hand.
