The Center announces its schedule of events for the week of September 4, 2023.
On Tuesday, Sept. 5, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Sarah Enright will be the Center’s featured speaker on Sioux City’s Unsolved Crimes. Enright is the Sioux City Public Library’s Local History Librarian Specialist. Her presentation will use archived newspaper clippings, microfilm and web resources to present facts, theories and law enforcement efforts about Sioux City criminal cases that have gone cold. Throughout her discussion, Enright will encourage Center guests to share their own memories and theories about these unsolved crimes.
This program is the last of the Center’s “Tuesdays for You,” series for 2023, which has offered programming led by guest presenters on a range of topics on Tuesday evenings since July. The series has gained traction over the course of the summer, with audiences gradually growing in appreciation for the range of topics covered and presenters participating.
On Saturday, Sept. 9, the Center continues its fall children’s programming with its second Adventure Saturdays offering, “Cultures of Siouxland.” In this class, students will learn to identify elements of culture generally, elements of their own culture and the differences between their own and other cultures. They will also read a book together, contemplate the ways different cultural norms of the members of the Corps of Discovery affected the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and craft a project that celebrates cultural diversity in Siouxland.
The class is offered to K-3rd Graders from 1:00 to 2:00, and the 4-6th Graders from 2:30 to 3:30. Class size is limited and registration is required. Parents may register their children to participate on the Center’s website under the Events/Classes tab. Parents may also stay informed about this series and all the Center’s children’s programming by joining the Center’s new Facebook group “Sioux City Lewis & Clark Kids,” or by calling Education Coordinator Amanda Gibson at 712-224-5242.
The Center’s week of programming ends with an audience favorite as Jack and Mike Langley entertain with September Songs for Grandparents’ Day on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 2:00 in the Betty Strong Encounter Center auditorium.
This father and son duo have performed together for more than 40 years and their travels have taken them to Nashville and Vienna, among other notable locations. Their show includes original compositions, as well as old favorite tunes. The program will be followed by a reception.
All the Center’s programming is offered to the public free of charge.
