The Betty Strong Encounter Center is pleased to bring the wonderful photography of Jerry Mennenga to its main gallery. His exhibit opens Tuesday, June 6 and runs until Sunday, July 16. The free exhibit is open to view during normal business hours.
Mennenga has been photographing 40 plus years, working for various news publications and photo agencies that included weeklies and small dailies. He has worked in various locales such as Illinois, Texas, Louisiana, California, and ending in Iowa. His blog, lostinsiouxland.com, is in homage to his work as a newspaper photographer which Mennenga began in 2012.
Somewhat retired, Mennenga found a new interest during the two years of COVID-19 when little was known about the virus, and people maintained their distances in interactions with others. During that time, he began photographing birds in his backyard and other locales in Siouxland like Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve and Badger Lake near Whiting, Sylvan Runkel State Preserve, DeSoto Bend National Wildlife Refuge, and various county gravel roads where ponds and other areas afforded habitat for wildlife.
He is still curious and likes to travel and post a variety of images along with some musings about places, events, and outings throughout the Siouxland region. Sometimes he even makes forays up to Sioux Falls, SD and down to Omaha, NE. More of his work can also be seen at JerryLMennengaphotographer.photoshelter.com.
