Floyd Monument
The Sergeant Floyd Monument is a landmark on the Missouri River at Floyd’s Bluff at 2601 South Lewis Boulevard in Sioux City. The monument honors Charles Floyd, a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, who died on the upstream voyage in 1804 and was buried here.
Floyd River Campsite
Once you’ve toured the Center’s exhibits related to Lewis and Clark’s journey through Siouxland, you can continue your historic exploration by traveling just a mile east on Larsen Park Road (just past the pavilion) to the Floyd River Commemorative Campsite. This historical marker commemorates an area where the Lewis and Clark Expedition is believed to have camped after the death of Sgt. Charles Floyd.
You’ll recognize the site because it is marked by a 7′ x 7′ boulder painted by artist Ray “Bubba” Sorenson. The boulder has four semi-flat sides, each depicting a different scene from the Expedition’s trip through what would become Sioux City, a leg of the journey most significantly marked by the death of Sgt. Charles Floyd.
The rock was dedicated in May 2023 following four years of funding efforts and coordination by Dan Whitlock, a dedicated member of the Sgt Floyd Tri-State Chapter of the Lewis and Clark Trail Foundation.
