In the early 1900s, immigrants came to Sioux City seeking jobs in meatpacking plants, the stockyards, railroads and allied industries. Many could neither read nor write English. All were hungry for a better life. “Building Bridges to Better Lives” offers insight into the struggles of these families and individuals, the East Bottoms (the neighborhood where many of the new immigrants lived), and the beginnings of the almost century-old Mary J. Treglia Community House and its services to Sioux City immigrants and their children.
