April 14 at 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Free

The Spring Meeting for the Sergeant Floyd Tri-State Chapter of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation will take place on Sunday, April 14, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Discovery Gallery (classroom) on the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center side of the building.

The meeting will be followed by a presentation by Dan Whitlock about the history and construction of the Floyd Monument, from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. This presentation will begin with the discovery of Floyd’s long-lost journal in 1893. The discovery of the journal increased public interest in the Expedition and its publication increased interest in erecting a monument at Floyd’s burial site. The Floyd Memorial Association was formed in 1895 and it took several years for construction to begin. Mr. Whitlock’s presentation will review the efforts to develop the design for a suitable monument, the selection of the materials used for the monument, and the construction and dedication of the monument. The current condition of the monument will also be reviewed and a discussion of suggested repairs will be held. Feedback from attendees is welcome.
